8 Month Review

February 15, 2012

After 8 months I have put 2200 miles communting to work on this bike. I have had 12 flats (1front and 11 in back). I am ready to replace rear tire with kevlar tire, double think tube, and then add slime. I have also had to have the rear spokes retightened and realigned that became very loose and wobbly after 5 months of riding. The bike will only go 11.5 miles fully loaded in hilly terrain. So I have to carry charger with me everywhere I go. I love the bike but I just don’t like the flat tires and having to carry the charger with me every time I ride anywhere further than 10 miles If I could get replacement parts (ie: charger immediately and battery in future) I would be a very satisfied owner of the Schwinn e-bike. I have another Schwinn Searcher E8 on order at Performance bike but may cancel my order due to poor SChwinn service and inability to get replacement parts, at reasonable cost, in a timely manner. Looking at Trek and other ebikes as alternative to Schwinn if ebike problems cannot be solved by Schwinn.

Good bike - Beware of Schwinn Parts issue!

December 23, 2011

So far I like my bike. It's a good bike and does the job for me which is commuting 6 miles each way to work. I cannot do the round-trip on one charge because the way back has some steep hills especially near my house which there is a 0.6 mile very steep grade hill and the battery usually petered out in the middle. That is a problem. Although you can pedal fine on a flat road, the bike is very heavy and it is a drag to pedal up a steep hill. I tried to get a second charger but after about a month of contacting dealers (Schwinn costumer service never responded) and spending $60 only to be sent the wrong charger by Schwinn to the dealer, I was told that the charger is out-of-stock, will take several months to be sent and costs $300! Yes. The charger is $300. I now carry my charger back and forth to work with me. I fully expect to throw out the bike once any part on the electric system breaks because I have no faith in Schwinn actually providing replacement parts.

DO NOT BUY THIS BIKE

December 15, 2011

Don't waste your money on this bike!! It will break down in a year and schwinn will not support it. The will not make the parts available any where to purchase. When you try to call them or write them to find out how to fix you 2 THOUSAND dollar bike they will ignore you. Schwinn sucks!!

4 Month Review Pros and Cons

November 2, 2011

After 4 months I have put 1300 miles on the bike. The bike is runs great on flat ground but is too heavy for commuting with a small loads (ie: laptop and clothing) especially when going up hills. If Schwinn built an electric bike using lighter weight components this bike would be a winner. Pros: - I love riding the bike and the concept of the electric bike - Being green - Being able to commute 23 miles a day, 5 days a week, up and down hills without getting tired. - Can keep up with racing bikes going up hills with load - Toshiba battery and 30 min charging Cons: - Charger stopped working after 3 months and had to be replaced - Have had 7 flat tires (1 front and 6 back). Most flats were caused by rubbing of tube near rim seam which has an edge. - Left crank and rear rack loosened up to the point of needing emergency repairs at bike shop - Very difficult to repair flats on the road. Need to be very handy mechanicly to be able fix bike on road. - Bike too heavy for serious riding - Charge only lasts about 12 miles carrying a load while going up and down hills. So need to always bring charger along. - Charger not portable. - Need option of purchasing 2nd charger and battery at reasonable price to leave at office or to have as spare. - 15mph electric motor cutoff. Bottom Line: Love the concept of Schwinn electric bike to be green and get exercise. The electric bike needs to go on a diet to loose 10-15 lbs. Lighter rear wheel with 9 speed cluster and high quality Shimino deraileur and all lightweight components would help. Would prefer 20mph motor cutoff for flats. Both f/r wheels need quick releases to be able to fix flats. If Schwinn could do that at MSRP of $2679 then the electric bike would be a total winner.

Think Carefully before buying

October 12, 2011

I have been waiting on a new controller for my Schwinn Electric Bike for nearly a YEAR now, they said I should receive one in May and now they are saying December. Who know what they will say then. Schwinn parts support has been horrible, so think about it carefully before buying a Schwinn Electric Bike!
