Travel Bike

January 30, 2012

I bought this bike to take to Europe for a leisurely trip through the mountains. It arrived promptly, and both brakes, the shifter, and the derailleur were totally unadjusted. After a little tinkering, it functioned well. The bag is garbage--it didn't last an hour. Thin, unlined material that is not made to carry a bike that weighs about 45 lbs. Yes, the bike is heavy. It is not good for daily commuting on the subway, as it's bulky, heavy, and hard to carry one-handed. It will fit in a closet or in the trunk of a small car, though. I brought it as checked baggage to Spain and rode it through the mountains of Leon and Galicia for a week and a half. I wore a backpack and carried my food and rain gear in a handbar bag, and strapped to the rear luggage rack. The rack is set so that your calves will bang into whatever is tied on there if it's close to the seat, so it's stricktly a small package area, which was disappointing. The tires held up well on cobblestones, stony paths, dirt roads, and through streams. The derail needed mid trip tuning, the brakes and tires were perfect. The bike provoked a lot of laughter from Spaniards. They were unfamiliar with the Schwinn brand, and assumed it (and I) must be Dutch. They had never seen a cheap Chinese folding bike, as space is not at a premium in the countryside. It excited no envy. The center of gravity is strange, and small wheels mean less countersteer, which was unsettling at first, as the bike felt twitchy and unstable, but I soon got used to it. The handlebar height is fixed, so taller riders may be frustrated by the small frame and low bars. The riding position is strictly Grandma style. Good uses: apartment dwellers, boat owners, small car owners (strap it to the luggage rack on your Miata.) Bad uses; commuting on public transit, carrying it up five flights of stairs. I am satisfied with it, but it's bulk and weight are negative factors.

Functional. Stylish. A real head turner.

I have owned this bike for about two years now. I ride it everyday. It's an awesome bike. I am a college student and live in the city where my school is about 5-10 mins away by bike. I use this bike to get to school, the grocery store, and every where else. The built-in rack is so super convenient. I can throw my book bag or grocery bag on it and tie them to my seat then go. I also attached a basket to the front for even more convenience when I need to shop. Having 7 speeds is nice too, but where I live it's pretty flat so I don't need it. And I can go on and on about how great it is to be able to fold the bike up and throw it in the truck of a friend's car when I leave school late at night and need a ride home. I love the gray splash guards over the tires, it makes driving through puddles fun because I don't worry about getting wet up. If you purchase this bike, be prepared to be stopped on the streets, in the store, and where ever you go because it looks so unique that everyone has questions and wants to see it. There have been times I have come outside and found groups of people around my bike admiring it. "That's that bike that folds in half, isn't it," they say with a smile. But because the bike stands out so much, make sure you have extra protection for it because my bike has been stolen twice. It's been recovered twice, however, for the same reason it has been stolen: it's unique and the police can spot it a mile away. The steal U-locks work the best. Register you bike at the police station or with campus police with the serial number imprinted under the bike. DO NOT USE THE CORD LOCKS, robbers can cut them like butter. The one CON if have with this bike is the tire spokes gave out in a year because they are not that durable. I had to replace them with stainless tire frames that will last year's long and can hold much more wait. Also, because the tire's are only 20" you get to top speed pretty quickly and then can't peddle anymore, but you'll get there fast nonetheless. People of any height can use this bike though because it adjusts so well. Overall, this is a great bike that I see myself owning for years to come. It's very functional for the commuter like me. It's stylish and light weight. Easy to store and fold and adjust. It's a real head turner so I hope you like attention because everyone will be looking at you cruise by. ;)
