Feb 17, 2005

Schwinn Bicycle Company is proud to announce its latest venture, Schwinn Motor Scooters. Schwinn the 105-year-old manufacturer of the best known and most respected brand in bicycles will introduce the first models of its new line of four-stroke gas-powered motor scooters at the 2005 Dealernews International Powersports Dealer Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana (booth #6834).

Schwinn will launch three 50cc models, the Schwinn Campus, the Schwinn Collegiate and the Schwinn Graduate at the Expo, February 19-21. Each model is currently available in two colors and will feature the Schwinn Quality Seal.

Schwinn is a highly trusted name in the wheeled goods category and is one of the most recognized and respected brands in the U.S., said Chris Hornung, CEO and Founder of Pacific Cycle, owner of the Schwinn Bicycle brand. Weve had great success with a variety of Schwinn-branded wheeled goods and gas powered scooters are a natural extension of the Schwinn brand.

Schwinn plans to launch additional models in 2005 in the 80cc or 125cc engine category. All of the scooters are four-stroke engines and meet DOT and EPA regulations for motor vehicles.

The motor scooter market is the fastest growing motorcycle segment. According to Powersports Business, a popular motorcycle industry trade magazine, motor scooter sales grew at a rate of 18% in 2003. 2004 total U.S. scooter sales are estimated to be well over 100,000 units.

The motor scooter market is booming, said Bruno Maier, Vice President of New Business Development and Licensing for Pacific Cycle. This new, high quality product represents an opportunity to the bicycle shops that can accommodate gas-powered mobility products. Schwinn Motor Scooters will bring additional traffic and sales to independent bicycle dealerships.

Schwinns sales and distribution strategies will focus on the dealer market. The products will sell through qualified Motor Sports Dealers, Scooter Dealers and Independent Bicycle Dealers. To support the sales team, Schwinns marketing efforts will be initially dedicated to building retailer support. Once a retail base is established those efforts will begin to shift to a more consumer focused marketing campaign.

Dealers that qualify for the sale of Schwinn scooters will enjoy the following benefits:

  • Schwinn Motor Scooters will offer the highest margins in the motor sports category.
  • Schwinn Motor Scooters Charter Dealerships will be available. Those dealers who commit to an opening order of 100 units or more will be given protected sales territories.
  • Schwinn Motor Scooters will support dealers and customers with world-class customer service.
  • Schwinn Motor Scooters dealers benefit by being associated with the Schwinn brand, one of the most well-known and respected brands in all of consumer products.
  • Schwinn Motor Scooters will carry the Schwinn Quality Seal, which stands for quality, innovation and products of the highest integrity.
