How to Make a Star Bicycle Chain Ornament

In search of a thoughtful gift idea or a new ornament for your home? This star bicycle chain ornament is the perfect holiday craft for you. While we always hope your Schwinn bike chain is properly maintained so that you can ride more, sometimes you just need to replace it. Instead of throwing out an old chain, repurpose it for this craft!

Star Ornament:

If there was such a thing as a classic repurposed bicycle DIY Holiday project this would be it. The star ornament is easier than it looks; however, it is vital to have the right tools.

For this project you will need:

  • A chain breaker (pictured to the right),
  • Pliers,
  • Superglue,
  • A wire or thread-based hook to hang your ornament.
  • We also used some gold spray paint to give our ornament a new twist.

Step 1. If you are using an old chain, it is a good idea to de-grease and clean the chain before you begin. If you don't have any de-greaser readily available dish soap works to remove the grease as well.

Step 2. Measure out five (5) full links. Then push out the pin on the fifth link with your chain breaker.

Step 3. Use your pliers to push the pin into the last chain link. Your chain should be attached liked a circle. Don't worry that it isn't in a star shape yet, that is what the superglue is for.

Step 4. Form your chain into the shape of a star with each link pointing out as one of the 5 points of the star. Then superglue the joints of the star together so that it will keep its shape. (I used a glue gun because I tend to create disaster zones with super glue).

Step 5 (Optional). Spray paint your star. We chose to spray paint our's gold for a more personal touch.

Step 6. Use a wire hook or string looped through one of the star's points in order to hang your star.
