Lubricating your bike chain and drivetrain

One of the last steps to cleaning your bike is lubing the drivetrain and bike chain. Even if your bike doesn’t need a good scrub down, your chain may need a little attention. Any rattling, scraping or squeaking that you hear on your bike may indicate that your chain is dirty and needs to be looked after. A well-lubricated and clean drivetrain and bike chain will not only reduce that annoying sound, but also will increase the longevity of these components, which aren’t inexpensive to replace.

If you ride frequently it is good to get into the habit of degreasing and lubing your chain once a month. See our full bike maintenance timeline for a complete picture of recommended maintenance.
