The time has come for your child’s very first bike, or maybe something new in a larger size. While there are tons of bikes out there, finding one that fits doesn’t need to be difficult. We’re here to help!
Q: What are the sizes based on?
A: Kids' bikes are typically sized by wheel diameter, which gives you a good starting point when shopping. But wheel size isn't the only factor to consider. Your child's height and inseam measurements can help you determine which bike will provide the right fit.
Q: Do bike sizes correlate to kids’ ages?
A: Yes and no. Age can give you a general idea of what size bike your child may need, but inseam is the best measurement to use when determining bike fit, with height as a helpful secondary measurement. Kids can vary quite a bit in height and proportions, especially during growth spurts, so measuring your child rather than relying on age alone will give you a more accurate starting point.
Q: Is my child too young to ride?
A: It’s always good to start learning early. Balance bikes are a great way for kids to start learning to ride around two years old, while kids as young as 18 months can come along for the ride in a trailer or child carrier that easily attaches to your adult-sized bike.
Q: How do I measure my child for a bike?
A: Start with two measurements: inseam and height. Inseam is the most important measurement for bike fit, while height provides a helpful secondary reference. For the most accurate inseam measurement, use a book between your child’s legs to mark the top of their inner thigh against a wall, then measure from the floor to the top of the book.
How to Find the Right Size Kids’ Bike
We’ve got a wide range of kids’ bike sizes to help riders find a comfortable fit as they grow. Start by measuring your child’s inseam and height, then use the size information below as a guide. 12-Inch Bikes
12-inch bikes are our smallest size for the smallest riders. Designed to fit kids with a 16” to 19” inseam and 36” to 43” height, 12-inch bikes are typically a good fit for riders around 3 to 5 years old. Kids at this age are often just learning how to ride on two wheels, so most 12-inch bikes come with training wheels, while others are balance bikes designed to help kids learn to ride by developing balance first. Depending on how they want to learn, you can choose what works best for your little learner.
16-Inch Bikes
Our 16-inch bikes are designed to fit kids with a 19” to 22” inseam and 42” to 48” height, typically for riders around 5 to 7 years old. They’re a great next step for kids who have learned the basics on a smaller bike, but can also be a first bike for kids who are ready to learn with or without training wheels.
18-Inch Bikes
18-inch bikes are designed to fit kids with a 21” to 25” inseam and 44” to 50” height, and are typically a good fit for riders around 6 to 9 years old. This in-between size can offer a better fit for kids who are growing out of a 16-inch bike but aren’t quite ready for a 20-inch bike. Some riders may still need training wheels, while others are ready to ride on two wheels.
20-Inch Bikes
20-inch bikes are designed to fit kids with a 23” to 27” inseam and 47” to 53” height, and are typically a good fit for riders around 7 to 10 years old. At this stage, many riders are gaining independence and building the skills to ride on their own. This size is also available in a variety of bike styles, from everyday riding to mountain biking.
24-Inch Bikes
A great option for growing riders who have outgrown smaller kids' bikes but aren't quite ready for a full-size bike, 24-inch bikes are typically a good fit for riders around 8 years old and up, depending on their height and inseam. With a more grown-up feel and a range of bike styles, 24-inch bikes can be a great choice for tweens and teens.
26-Inch Bikes
26-inch bikes are a common choice for older tweens, teens, and smaller adults that are over about 4’6” tall, depending on their inseam and overall fit. At this size, choosing the right bike style becomes just as important as finding the right fit.
